Accompanying study: Public services – international experiences

Accompanying study: Public services – international experiences

Demographic changes are affecting many regions of Germany and Europe. How do sparsely populated regions of Europe adapt their technical and social infrastructure to the changing demographics? This question is central to the preliminary study which the nexus Institute is compiling as part of the "Aktionsprogramm regionale Daseinsvorsorge" (En: Programme of Action for the Regional Provision of Public Services). The nexus team researches topics, projects and actors in a European comparison. Especially relevant are the integrated strategies of public services of technical and social infrastructure.

Affected regions are confronted with the task of providing and financing public services for a reduced number of users. The nexus team is compiling a comprehensive overview of experiences in Europe and beyond (e.g. Australia, Japan, and Canada). The goal is to tap into and develop innovative approaches to stimulate the German model regions. Research programs and networks active in this area are also being researched. In the second project phase, suggestions for international cooperation and the regional exchange of experiences will be developed.

In addition to intensive research, the project team will organise two workshops for presenting initial results and discussing possible forms of cooperation with regions within and outside of Europe. The activities are part of the "Aktionsprogramm regionale Daseinsvorsorge", which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS) and the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) as a Modellvorhaben der Raumordnung (MORO) (En: Demonstration Projects of Spatial Planning).
